Here Are the Types of Fireworks You CAN Launch in Minnesota

Summer has officially started and the 4th of July is on the horizon. That means cookouts, time at the lake, a few drinks, and of course fireworks. But what ones can we legally light off in our state?

According to the Minnesota State Firemarshall, examples of legal fireworks include:

• Sparklers
• Cones and tubes that emit sparks
• Novelty items like snakes, and party poppers

These legal fireworks are not allowed to be lit off on public property like parks, roads, alleyways, government property, or schools. As per usual, you need to be 18 years old to purchase these fireworks.

When it comes to what isn't allowed it is basically anything that flys or explodes. Things that are still deemed illegal include:

• Firecrackers
• Bottle rockets
• Missiles
• Roman candles
• Mortars and shells

If you want to shoot off fireworks that make a bigger boom, you can get a Fireworks Operator Public Display Certification. 

To be certified, a person must pass the State of Minnesota Fireworks Operators Examination. In addition, applicants must provide evidence of experience, which must include active participation as an assistant or operator in the performance of at least five fireworks displays, with at least one occurring in the current or preceding year.

There is also a $100 certification fee, and it is valid for four years once official.

Sure we can't legally launch our own super exciting fireworks, but there will be no shortage of places to see them, and they are always better when someone else spends the big bucks on them right? Have a very safe and happy 4th of July!
