When I was young, the only way I was able to attend college was due to scholarships through the community college in North Carolina where I ultimately graduated from in 1992. Without that money, it would have been straight to work for me.

And a lot of people find themselves in a similar situation. Even after they get started in school, life happens and the need for extra money becomes a real thing for them.

Benton County Sheriff Troy Heck and the Benton County Sheriff’s Department have announced that the application period for the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association annual Law Enforcement Scholarship Program is now underway.

The announcement was made recently on the Department’s “X” account. The Minnesota Sheriffs Association will award up to eighteen scholarships at two thousand dollars a piece to students who fit one of these three mandated categories:

  • They are currently enrolled in the mandate POST Skills Program

  • They are in their 2nd year of a two year law enforcement program

  • In their third year of a four year law enforcement program

The emphasis of these scholarships are to go to students that need financial assistance while they obtain their education and training in either a two year or a four year program.  This scholarship program stems from the importance that the Minnesota Sheriffs Association puts on pre-entry training for men and women who have an interest in Law Enforcement.

The Association has a goal serving all geographic areas around the state and they encourage students from all across the state to apply for this scholarship money. Students can pick up an application at the Benton County Sheriffs Office or find it online at https://www.co.benton.mn.us/237/Forms.

Applications must be turned in by November 21st and the scholarship winners will be announced on December 30th of this year.
