Happy Pi Day! March 14th is the day we celebrate the number Pi as well as actual pie. Because who doesn't want an excuse to eat a delicious dessert? I decided to browse the web to find out what Minnesota's favorite flavor of the treat is. I was almost 100% sure it would be apple. We have a lot of apple trees and orchards in Minnesota, and the University of Minnesota is even responsible for creating NEW apples, how could our favorite not be apple pie?!

According to Food Network, Minnesota's favorite flavor is banana cream pie. I did not see that coming! Back in the late 19th century, Minnesota had one of the largest dairy industries (we still do!) and bananas were just starting to be brought in from Latin America. Local bakers mixed the fruit into a cream pie and the state went nuts for it! The first recipe for a banana cream pie was published in 1880 in Minneapolis. Guy Fieri from Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives is even a big fan of the Duluth Grill banana cream pie!

So while we might be known for apples around these parts, Minnesota is king when it comes to banana cream pies! Have a slice and celebrate Pi Day!
