PET-FRIENDLY FLOWERS FOR VALENTINE'S DAY

If you are planning on celebrating Valentine's Day by bringing your Valentine a lovely flower arrangement, please take note. If your Valentine has pets, many plants and flowers are toxic to cats and dogs.

To stay on the safe side of the tracks, consider avoiding the toxic varieties, including roses, and opt for something pet-friendly. You'll probably score big points for being so considerate!

What I didn't realize about plants is that ANY plant can cause vomiting and tummy upset for dogs and cats, but are mild. Others can be deadly. ASPCA is a great place to find information.

TOXIC FOR CATS

Plants that are toxic to cats but not dogs include a large variety of lilies:

Day Lilies, Lilies, Easter Lilies & Japanese Show Lilies, Orange Day Lilies, Red Lilies, Rubrum Lilies, Stargazer Lilies, Tiger Lilies, and Wood Lilies: Cause vomiting, lethargy, kidney failure & Death . The toxic principles of these lilies are unknown, so it would be wise for your flowers to be in a location where your cats cannot rub against them, touch them, or chew on them.

TOXIC FOR CATS AND DOGS

The following flowers are toxic to both cats and dogs. This is not a FULL list, but these are commonly given as gifts for special holidays, so if you have a pet owner, you should avoid giving them these plants:

  • Amaryllis
  • Azalea
  • Daffodil
  • Daisy
  • Eucalyptus
  • Tulips
  • Carnations

The symptoms vary but can include excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, drowsiness, and difficulty swallowing, as well as low blood pressure, convulsions, incoordination, skin reactions, anorexia, coma, and death.
Safe choices for your animal-loving recipient include Sunflowers, Petunias, Pansies, Marigolds, Snapdragons, Violas, Freesia and Orchids.
