The summer is rapidly coming to an end. That will never be more evident than this weekend when the daytime highs on Saturday and Sunday are expected to top off at just under 70 degrees.

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to squeeze in more family time by enjoying the great outdoors that Minnesota has to offer.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources took the opportunity this past Friday, which was National Relaxation Day, to say that the State Forests around the state are perfect ways to relax, de-stress and enjoy time with your favorite people.

Our state forests feature plenty of trails for hiking and biking. Plus, there’s the opportunity just to be surrounded by nature with a leisurely stroll. You can help your kids learn about their surroundings or you all can learn together.

The Department of Natural Resources says they’re in the process of updating the maps for all 60 state forests, and that will be completed in the next two years. They’ve made the maps for the state forests much easier to use as well.  There are actual old-fashioned “hold in your hand” maps for several forests, or you can download what is called “Geo PDF” maps to your smart phone.

I mentioned the trails that are available around the state, the DNR is in the process of revising their trail plan for users to follow too. You can find everything you need to know here.

If you are planning to take to a forest near you in the coming future, the DNR encourages you to use local wood for your fires. Using wood from nearby where you will be building your fire helps reduce bringing in species that can harm the trees that call that area home.

There’s still plenty of time to get out enjoy the beauty that Minnesota has to offer, and the above information will hopefully help you and your family enjoy your time outdoors and protect the environment so that we will be able to get out and enjoy the outdoors for many years to come.

Come with us as we Visit Dassel, Minnesota from throughout the Years
