I was in the store the other day and saw a sign that said, “back to school”, and for some reason it was a bit surprising. The sun was out, kids were playing along the way of my drive to the store, and I guess I was just in a mindset of really enjoying the summer weather.

The sign reminded me that in about a month, the countdown will be getting louder and louder for kids to go back to school. But it will also be the same for those who go to college too.

I also realized that I’ve been out of college for over 30 years, and when I think back to those days, there wouldn’t have been college for me without financial assistance.

That’s the truth for so many people, and not just those who have recently graduated. There are many people who might have the desire to go back to school but raising their family or there’s just not enough money to make that a reality and it seems impossible.

But in Minnesota, the dream of going back to school and seeking a better life may be easier to obtain than you realize.

There's A Way Where There Doesn't Seem To Be A Way

Did you know that in 2024, 71,500 residents in Minnesota received money for school from the Minnesota State Grant. That number comes from the Minnesota Department of Higher Education as does this number; $243 million, that’s how much money was given out in 2024 alone.

So, you see, there is help available.

The Department of Higher Education also says that 50% of those receiving grant money had an adjusted gross family income of $40,000 per year or lower. That’s the money remaining after certain deductions are taken out of what you make each pay period.

How Do You Qualify For This Funding?

To qualify, you must have completed secondary school or its equivalent; you must be at least 17 years old, and you will be enrolled in at least three credits at one of the more than 130 eligible schools in Minnesota.

There’s still time to get started for the upcoming start of the next school year. Get all the details you need to know here.
