Sunscreen and bug spray will become popular items as well as hitting the road for vacation or a trip to the cabin or your favorite lake. It is that time of year.

We have also entered the 100 deadliest days of the year. These are the days between Memorial Day to Labor Day and of course are centered around driving.

This week the Minnesota Highway State Patrol put out on their “X” account that they were teaming up with the Iowa State Patrol and the South Dakota Highway Patrol to promote safety on the roads in those and other states.

The State Patrol said yesterday in a release that there were 151 fatalities on roads around the state during the 100 deadliest days in 2024. By the end of the year, at least 479 people had died in crashes.

The breakdown from the State Patrol says that of the deaths on Minnesota roads last year:

  • 138 deaths were because of speed

  • 124 deaths attributed to alcohol

  • 108 people died because they weren’t restrained properly

  • 29 deaths happened because of distracted driving

Things to keep in mind to help you be safe this year include:

  • Give yourself plenty of time to get where you are going so you can obey the speed limit (Remember speed was the leading cause of fatal accidents last year)

  • Put your phone down

  • Buckle your seatbelt

  • Never drive impaired of drugs or alcohol

Remember that from now until Labor Day, you should plan to deal with heavier traffic and quite possibly drivers who aren’t from around here who may be more uncertain on the roads. Let’s all take the advice of the Minnesota State Patrol and offer patience and grace to one another on the roads this year. And I’m talking to myself first and foremost.
