Some people are just coming back from vacation, while others are still enjoying some well-deserved time off. If you’re like most folks getting back from vacation, once you’ve gotten laundry done and returned to work, and looked over all the vacation pictures a couple of times, there’s likely a small part of you that starts longing for your next trip.

I felt that after my recent vacation, I’ve been looking for possible locations for hopefully another awesome trip next year. Of course, that takes research, planning and saving.

Once the research is done, when is the best time to start booking your plans for the next trip?

Is It Better To Book Flights Early Or Later?

Well, according to Travel and Leisure, the best time to book a flight is between one and three months prior to the date of your flight. If you want to fly out of the country, they suggest booking those flights no fewer than three months in advance.

The T+L article says that booking too far in advance might not be the best idea or if you wait too close to time (inside three months), you put yourself at risk of overpaying for those tickets.

If your next air travel will likely come around the holidays, the lower prices for that time of year will be available in September and October. If you can be flexible in your travel dates, you will increase your odds of saving more money. Being flexible may also allow you to avoid the busiest travel days as well.

If you are willing to have flights that have layovers, or add cities to your trip, there could also be savings there as well.

When Is The Best Time To Book A Hotel?

Travel and Leisure says that hotel prices can fluctuate from day to day, so understanding that can help with frustrations in some ways, but in another way could cause you to feel pressure to get the right price at the right time.

Booking early offers you more types or rooms to choose from, but it may not be the best if price is the most important aspect of booking a hotel for your vacation.

T+L quotes data from hotels.com that people who booked within a week of their arrival saved 35% less in the summer months than those who booked further out. Again, booking later could mean you don’t get the type of room you want, but you may not pay as much either.

If you like being spontaneous, booking at the last minute after a major holiday has passed is a good time to find a deal on a hotel.

Clearly, those no hard fast rule on when do to what because there are advantages to booking early and booking later, the key thing is to know your budget and when you find a price you like, book it.
