You don’t have to spend much time in Minnesota to know that it is a very bike friendly state. You can gauge that from all the cyclists who are moving around or at least all the bike lanes that are a part of the roadways around the area.

These facts are good news for those who love to bike for exercise, or they use biking as their main form of transportation. But it can come with its challenges for both those riding and those behind the wheel that don’t pay close attention.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation posted on their “X” account this week reminding both motorists and cyclists they have an obligation to help try to keep each other safe on the roads.

What Those On Bicycles Need To Do:

  • Ride in the same direction as traffic
  • Obey all traffic laws and using all traffic signals to communicate to others
  • Be extra aware and cautious when around moving traffic
  • Wear reflective, light colored gear and place headlights and taillights on your bike
  • Make sure you wear a helmet
  • Stay on roads and trails. Avoid riding on the sidewalk.
  • No riding while looking at your phone

What Motorist Need To Know:

  • When encountering cyclists on the road, be patient
  • Slow down when driving around bikes
  • Allow at least 3 feet when following a bike, pass only when it’s safe
  • When making turns, be on the lookout for cyclists before making the turn
  • When exiting your vehicle, look around to see if there are any bicycles around if you are in an area when people ride so you don’t open your door into them
  • Don’t honk your horn behind a cyclist, this could cause them to be startled and wreck their bikes.
  • Remember a lot of kids ride bicycles and they can be unpredictable, so stay alert.

Having a little more patience and paying close attention should help us all be able to navigate around Central Minnesota safely. No one wants to have to live with the memory of becoming impatient and making a life altering decision.
