I came across this TV listing from 1963 for the St. Cloud area, it was posted last year from the Facebook group Old St. Cloud Minnesota. This listing is from Friday, November 8th of that year.

The post said there were only 4 and a half channels, meaning one station didn’t come on the air until 10am. The selection wasn’t bad for that time in Television. It’s obvious by the names of the Television shows that the type of TV then is dramatically different than it is now.

Do remember TV Stations: Channel 4- WCCO, Channel 5- KSTP, Channel 7 KCMT, Channel 9 KMSP, and Channel 11 WTCN?  Featuring shows like Captain Kangaroo, Romper Room, Concentration, I Love Lucy, The Real McCoys, Yogi Bear, 77 Sunset Strip, and Route 66 were among the hit shows featured on these stations.

There wasn’t as much News on then and this was before the Soap Operas multiplied and ran for several hours during the day. As you can see there were more family-style entertainment shows, some of which can still be found in syndication.

“Captain Kangaroo” aired from 1955-1984. So many of us who were born in the 60s and 70’s spent a great deal of time in the morning watching the Captain, Mr. Green Jeans, and the rest of the crew that helped us shape our young lives. I remember I learned to tell time by looking to see how much time was left in this show.

“The Search for Tomorrow” was a Soap Opera that aired from 1951 to 1986 and was one of the several “soaps” that was produced by Procter and Gamble Productions, the same company that produced many of the leading household products that were used during those times. Pretty creative marketing if you think about it, during a time when many women were housewives and spent their days watching these “stories” as many women called them.

“The Match Game”, “Leave It to Beaver”, and “The Lone Ranger” were just a couple of shows from this listing that families made appointments for viewing.

The days of these types of television shows are long gone, but the memories of these shows, and of this time period, will last a lifetime.

Good times for sure. Hopefully this helped bring back some good memories for you.
