Help Is On The Way For Minnesota Farmers Hit By Severe Weather
The last few days have been so beautiful; we’ve gotten a little taste of what makes this time of year in Minnesota so special. But we’ve also had some of what I’ll call “angry” weather as well over the last few weeks. Mother Nature has definitely shown us her ugly side.
Some parts of Minnesota have dealt with some extreme weather conditions that have caused damage to property and claimed livestock. Those affected are not only left with the clean-up, but they’re also left with the deficit of losing animals that are directly tied to their income.

Where To Turn For Help?
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture reports that technical and financial assistance is now available for farmers who suffered losses to their farms during the recent storms. The assistance will come to agriculture producers around the state from the United States Department of Agriculture.
There is a Livestock Indemnity Program that is in place to help farmers who suffered losses due to death of livestock that exceeds the normal mortality or if they have to sell injured stock at a reduced price.
To be considered for assistance, farmers will need to turn in the necessary paperwork by March 2nd, 2026. Any farmer with losses of livestock, crops or farm infrastructure should reach out to their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) Center and notify them of the issue.
FSA Centers can also help connect farmers who need help making payments to loan agencies with those who specialize in these types of situations. There are other loan options as well for producers who suffered losses in the recent storms.
For nursery tree growers or arborists, there is a program offering help to these folks too. The Tree Assistance Program offers funding to help rehabilitate trees, bushes, and shrubs. These folks must turn in their paperwork within 90 days of the occurrence.
