Take it from someone who has moved seven times in the last ten years, the last halfway across the country, moving is a real pain. I’ve done it probably fifteen times or more since I was 18, I’m 53 now, so I’ve got some experience at it, and I know what I speak is true.

If you’ve done it even once, you know also that I am preaching facts.

Some of my moves were just across town or a short distance away, and this is often where you’ll see pick-up trucks and uncovered trailers being used a lot.

No matter if you’re moving from one place to the next, or hauling that new piece of furniture you’ve bought, make sure you secure whatever you’re hauling so it stays in place. This may sound like a no-brainier, but it was a reminder that was offered by The Minnesota State Patrol last week.

They probably see it more than we do, where something is found in the roadway or on the interstate because someone didn’t properly secure what they had in the back of the truck or on the trailer.

As I spoke of earlier, I get that moving is a chore, so I understand fully and firsthand how you want to cram as much into the hauling space as possible, but that is usually where the problem starts.

Too many items into a space that wasn’t designed for that many things can lead to something flying free and being damaged, but it could also create an accident that could lead to more serious issues if someone is injured or killed.

The Minnesota State Patrol offers these tips before pulling onto the road with a load of stuff:

  • Secure the items properly

  • Cover them up

  • Re-check the straps and tarps to make sure everything stays in place

Again, these may sound obvious, but as the late comedian James Gregory was known to say, “you know that means, sometime in the past, some knucklehead”, well, I think you get the picture.

Minnesota Stereotypes...or Not? What are some of the things that are a stereotype, but also true?
