St. Cloud to Host the States Best Senior Athletes
So, the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are officially over. You may have seen the passing of the Olympic flag to the Mayor of Los Angeles, who will host in 2028.
The closing ceremonies also featured Tom Cruise being dropped from the top of a stadium, getting the Olympic flag from L.A.'s Mayor and Simone Biles. Then Cruise went on a motorcycle ride around Paris with the flag leading to a plane where he went Skydiving onto the Hollywood sign. The goal was to try and capture the interest from these games for the event four years from now in L.A.
While you wait, there’s another type of games you need to be aware of, The Minnesota State Senior Games. These start on Thursday in St. Cloud and will run through Sunday.
The Senior Games are for those 50 and older who still enjoy competing in games they likely played when they were younger, or maybe games they’ve picked up since then.
Unlike the Olympics, participants are grouped together into age groups, so that the level of competition is on a fairly even plane.
There are 15 sports that participants will go head-to-head in trying to come in first place. St. Cloud will host residents from all around Minnesota this weekend, with the headquarters of the games being at the Whitney Senior Center on Northway Drive.
The games themselves will be held at various locations around Greater St. Cloud including the bowling at Great River Bowl in Sartell, Tennis (Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles) will be held at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
Sauk Rapids Middle School will host the Power Walk and Race Walk Events as well as the track and field events. Tech High School will be the host site for the swimming competitions and Whitney Senior Center will be the site for several other events.
So, if you see any of the Senior Games participants this week, make them feel welcome and cheer them on.
